Quickstart

Clone, set your Stripe test keys, start the stack. I keep wanting to add a step somewhere in here and every time I try, it turns out not to be necessary, so it’s stayed at four.

What you need

Windows: use WSL2

On Windows, use WSL2 (not CMD, PowerShell, or Git Bash alone):
  1. Install WSL2 (Ubuntu is fine).
  2. Install Docker Desktop and enable the WSL2 backend (Settings → General → Use the WSL 2 based engine).
  3. Clone the repo inside the Linux filesystem — e.g. ~/projects/my-app — not under /mnt/c/....
  4. Run all make commands from a WSL terminal.

1. Clone

Windows: clone under ~/... in WSL2, then cd there before the next steps.

2. Environment file

Compose reads .env.development at the repo root. Defaults for Postgres, Redis, and APP_URL are already set for local Docker.

3. Stripe test keys

In dashboard.stripe.com, switch to Test mode, then Developers → API keys. Set these in .env.development:
Local billing and the migrator seed hit the Stripe test API — placeholder keys will fail.

4. Authenticate Stripe CLI + webhook secret

The Stripe CLI runs inside Docker (Compose stripe service). You do not install it on the host.
This logs the CLI into your Stripe account (browser flow) and writes STRIPE_WEBHOOK_SECRET into .env.development when it is still a placeholder. Auth lasts ~90 days; re-run when make start prompts you.

5. Start

Open the URL it prints — default http://localhost:8888 (APP_URL). Use make fresh-start when you want a clean rebuild (--build, force-recreate, and refresh volumes). Day to day, make start is enough.
